Weekly Overview of INTERDISCIPLINARitY
Week 1 Focusing & Knowledge Building Phase
Subjects Integrated: Biology 30, CALM (Senior High), Social Studies 30, PE 30 & Music 30
BIOLOGY
Students will begin to understand the biological and neurological basis of mental health. The students will explore the biological basis of mental health - through learning the anatomy and structures of the central nervous system (brain). Students will be introduced to neurotransmitters and their links to mental health.
CALM
Students will focus on mental health and explore the emotional/psychological, intellectual, social, spiritual and physical dimensions of health—and the dynamic interplay of these factors—in managing personal well-being. Students will research an adolescent mental disorder and present their findings to the class. At the end of the week, students will reflect on their current understandings of mental health.
Social Studies
Students will understand the the relationship between citizenship and ideology. They will investigate different types of citizenship and the connection between leadership and social action
Physical Education
Students will understand the relationship between physical activity and mental health. Students will assess all aspects of physical activity including social interactions in the context of physical activity and how that can affect mental health. Students will apply their new knowledge in their classroom interactions.
Music
Students will explore dramatic music from film and other art forms, with a specific focus on how music can affect emotion. Students will explore dramatic and emotional music making aesthetic judgements through deep critical reflection of their own emotions.
Week 2 Exploration Phase
Subjects Integrated: Biology, CALM, Social Studies, PE & Music
Biology
Students will work in triads to research and present a specific neurotransmitter to develop their understanding of the biochemical mechanisms of mental health.
CALM
Students will evaluate choices and combinations of choices that can create barriers to achieving and maintaining mental health. Students will analyze teen choices and teen behaviours that lead to mental health and wellbeing.
Social Studies
Student will understand mental health issues in society today through both school life and FNMI contexts. Students will investigate deeper into their own reflections on mental health and the relations to the community and social action.
Physical Education
Students will look a different physical activities geared specifically towards mental health. Students will not only participate in these activities, they will understand the cultural, and philosophical context that grounds these activities.
Music
Students will explore current music notation, and composition software. Students will use aesthetic and critical thinking skills regarding emotions to help them in the compositional process.

Week 3 Exploration & Experiential Learning Phase

Biology Students
Students will engage in laboratory work to examine models, computer simulations and dissections of the mammalian brain. Students will view prepared slides of neurons and synapses.
CALM
Students will engage with mental health experts in the classroom. Students will analyze reflect on a variety of strategies to achieve and enhance emotional and spiritual well-being. Students will develop and implement a personal plan to enhance mental health. Students will explain how feelings affect moods and behaviours. Students will discuss possible consequences of not constructively dealing with emotions— anger, depression, suicide.
Social Studies
Students will explore citizenship and social action within their community. Understand the barriers and challenges to public awareness and responsible citizenship
Physical Education
Students will understand the influence of peer pressure and media on body image. Students will understand physical activity, and physical fitness on the body, and what a healthy body is. Students will participate in a variety of fitness activities to help them have a wide range of choices for accomplishing their health goals.
Music
Students will explore how music can positively affect mental health and wellbeing from a trained music therapist. Students will continue to explore how music affects emotion through dramatic music, and continue to work through the compositional process.

Students will work in groups to prepare the final project, the mental health digital documentary for the school wide awareness campaign at the end of the week.

Physical Education
Students will understand leadership and communication skills related to implementing physical activity events or programs in the school and/or community. Students will assess community resources in relation to physical and mental well-being, and suggest possible improvements.

Students will present finished compositional works with class, explore recording technology to be used in their digital documentaries, and begin working on digital documentaries.

FINAL PROJECT: Digital Documentary Showcase & Awareness Campaign
Whole School Assembly
Grade 12 lead mental health awareness campaign with the whole school, teachers, administrators, parents, community members and the experts that were involved in student learning.
Students showcase their digital documentary to demonstrate their level of understanding of mental health in adolescents.
