The Framework & Ministerial Order
The Framework for Student Learning (2011) addresses the competencies for engaged thinkers and ethical citizens with an entrepreneurial spirit. The Framework is a result of Alberta Education initiatives and dialogue with multiple stakeholders in education to address the kind of education that students will need in the 21st century. Incorporating competencies into curriculum facilitates educators to create meaningful learning experiences in this interdisciplinary, mental health unit (Alberta Education, 2011). The Framework and the new Ministerial Order is “the foundation for the provision of Alberta Education curriculum”(p.1).
Competencies Overview
"Competencies are an interrelated set of attitudes, skills and knowledge that are drawn upon and applied to real world contexts. Students are the artists, scientists, thinkers, innovators and leaders of the future. They will be tasked with solving the problems of today, while imagining and creating a new tomorrow. Competencies are critical for equipping students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes that they will need to successfully navigate their personal journeys in learning, living and working (Alberta Education, 2011). " Students use and develop competencies when they encounter unfamiliar or challenging situations, such as the mental health issues/problems presented within this interdisciplinary unit. Within this interdisciplinary unit, students develop and apply competencies through the 5 subject-areas content and learning tasks and activities.
When we developed our interdisciplinary unit using 5 Alberta Education Programs of Study we designed learning activities for grade 12 students to apply and develop competencies in mental health problem situations. Some of the competencies were naturally part of our interdisciplinary learning outcomes (citizenship, personal growth and well-being) while others were emphasized (critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, creativity and innovation) to enrich learning.
